(Ordinary) Metamorphoses
Margaux Compte-Mergier's monographic exhibition is designed as a single installation, envisioned by the artist as a forest. The work unfolds through the dispersion of about thirty recently created sculptures. As in any landscape — even a metaphorical one —the near and the distant are intertwined, with dimensional relationships creating reliefs, and each sculpture delicately layers detail and fragment. The entire body of work exhibits a pronounced and evident deconstruction, presenting a total and almost grotesque disarray of familiar and bizarre anatomy. The twisting of reality is shaped everywhere by fictions, and by frictions —since these sculptures abound with exogenous elements such as computer parts, tree bark, cleaning gloves, and more. A grand lottery of medium manipulation and DNA: the sculptures evoke the shifting versatility of the human-object relationship, the symbiosis of entities binding simple trash to human organs.
